Gingerbread is traditionally associated with Christmas but who says it should only be enjoyed a few weeks of the year? A birthday gingerbread house is a novel concept in the UK but one which is catching on slowly but surely thanks to our American cousins where gingerbead is hugely popular all year round. The UK is hot on its heels however, with sales by British gingberbread manufacturers reaching £8.6 million in 2020 – that’s 1,656,274 kg of gingerbread!
The vast majority of those sales were from Christmas-related gingerbread but birthday gingerbread houses are a growing market. They certainly wouldn’t look out of place at a kids’ birthday party. But they’re also starting to prove popular at Valentines, Easter and Halloween too.
As you know I’m a big gingerbread fan anyway and Christmas is always a special time of year because I get to make absolutely tons of the stuff. But being able to make and decorate gingerbread all year round is a dream come true. And as far as I can tell there’s nothing not to like about them – They are bright, they are fun and they retain that lovely spicey gingerbread taste and aroma. They can also be personalised, just like cakes, with messages, colours, flavours and gingerbread additions such as people and animals.
Rainbow gingerbread
The main difference with a birthday gingerbread house is the colours. Christmas houses tend to be very festive with lots of greens, reds and golds. Naturally, they also have lots of white on them to emulate snow. With birthday houses the colours are fair more eclectic and varied with scope to design houses around a particular theme or colour – gardening, the seaside, disco, medicine, greens, blues, yellows, oranges or rainbow – the possibilities are endless. Rainbow is a particular favourite of mine because it’s simply so bright and pretty – you can’t help but smile when you see it.
Fill it with sweets
With a cake, naturally it’s filled with lashings of buttercream and jam. A gingerbread house can feel, well a bit empty, sometimes. But there’s nothing to stop you filling it with sweets – candies or truffles depending on what you like most. I love the idea of someone being presented with a gingerbread house and then smashing it open to enjoy the delights within.
Candles are a must
No self respecting birthday party is complete without candles on a cake and we can include them on gingerbread too so the birthday recipient still has something to blow out.
